| The Dos, Don'ts and Common Misconceptions of Hiring a DJ |
1. The music will be painfully loud. 2. My dj is not going to shut up.
The music at your affair should never be played at a volume that is uncomfortable, especially during cocktails and dinner, and your dj should never try to be the center of attention.

3. My dj will play the Macarena, the Chicken Dance and the Hokey Pokey. 4. My dj will be handing everyone blow-up guitars and silly hats.
Unless you specifically request, silly hats, sunglasses and blow-up instruments should have no place at your affair- and throw those "novelty" songs on your "DO NOT PLAY" list.

5. I have plenty of time to book my dj. 6. I need two djs at my affair.
We recommend hiring your dj soon after securing the venue, caterer, photographer and florist. Anyone worth their weight as a dj will book up quickly. Also, there is nothing that two djs can do in tandem that one experienced dj cannot do alone. Don't let someone convince you that you need a second dj unless your affair specifically requires such. This will save you a bundle of money.

7. I have a friend or relative who can be my dj. 8. I should hire the cheapest dj I can find.
Unless they are a professional dj, it is never a good idea to have a friend or relative handle the music at your affair. Quality entertainment comes with years of experience that goes far beyond just playing music. Also, hiring a cut-rate dj can bring its share of problems. Like anything, you get what you pay for. Shop around, interview, and make an educated decision.

9. My dj is not going to play the music I want to hear. 10. I want to choose every song for my affair and the order I want them played.
Your dj should allow you to be as specific as you wish in choosing the music for your affair. Compile some selections as a "play" list and a "do not play" list and your dj should honor these. Conversely though, try not to choose every song for the affair and the order you want them played. Give your dj some flexibility to do what he/she does best.
